BELIEVE

The Power of Faith, Hope, and Believing in Yourself

“Sometimes the only thing standing between you and your dreams is the belief that you can achieve them.”

Believe is an inspiring public art mural by Los Angeles artist and muralist Mike Norice, located at the corner of Kelso Street and Hillcrest Boulevard in Inglewood, California.

Completed in 2019, Believe is the fourth mural in the Artfully United Mural Tour, a community-driven public art initiative created to bring messages of hope, inspiration, unity, and positive change to neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles.

Featuring Norice's beloved character Powerful Paul, the mural transforms one simple word into a powerful visual statement about faith, perseverance, and the importance of believing in yourself.

In the artwork, Powerful Paul pulls open a dark gray wall as though unzipping the barriers standing between himself and a brighter future. Behind the opening, the enormous word BELIEVE emerges in bold black letters against a clean white background.

The contrast between darkness and light represents the challenges we face in life and the possibilities that become visible when we refuse to give up.

Believe is more than a word. It is a mindset, a source of strength, and sometimes the first step toward changing your life.

The Meaning Behind BELIEVE

Throughout life, we encounter obstacles that challenge our confidence, test our faith, and cause us to question our abilities.

Financial hardship, difficult environments, personal struggles, disappointment, and uncertainty can sometimes make our dreams feel impossible.

But believing is about recognizing that our present circumstances do not have to determine our future.

It is the courage to keep moving forward when the path ahead is unclear.

It is having faith in possibilities we cannot yet see.

It is trusting that our efforts, determination, and perseverance can lead us toward something greater.

For artist Mike Norice, who was born and raised in Watts, California, this message carries personal significance.

Having experienced poverty, homelessness, and the realities of growing up around gang violence, Norice understands how difficult it can be to maintain hope when surrounded by adversity.

Through Believe, he encourages people to look beyond their circumstances and recognize the potential that exists within themselves.

Your environment may influence your journey, but it does not have to define your destination.

Powerful Paul — Unzipping the Barriers of Life

At the center of the mural's message is Powerful Paul, the inspirational cartoon character created by Mike Norice in 2006.

Powerful Paul has become a recognizable symbol of hope, positivity, and community empowerment throughout Los Angeles.

With his signature white T-shirt, blue jeans, red sneakers, and joyful personality, Paul represents the extraordinary potential that exists within ordinary people.

In Believe, Paul is depicted pulling apart a massive gray wall using a bright yellow zipper.

This imaginative scene represents breaking through the barriers that prevent us from reaching our full potential.

The gray wall symbolizes fear, doubt, negativity, limited opportunities, and the challenges that life places in our path.

The zipper represents the ability to overcome those barriers through faith, courage, determination, and self-belief.

As Paul pulls the wall open, he reveals the word BELIEVE.

The message is simple:

Sometimes we must believe in what is possible before we can begin to see it.

Powerful Paul reminds viewers that strength is not always measured by physical power.

Sometimes our greatest strength comes from our faith, our mindset, and our willingness to keep trying when everything around us suggests we should quit.

The Spiritual Power of Believing

Beyond its motivational message, Believe carries a deeper spiritual meaning.

Faith often begins with believing in something greater than what we can physically see or understand.

It is trusting that even during life's most difficult moments, there is still purpose, hope, and the possibility of a better tomorrow.

For many people, that belief is rooted in their relationship with God and the power of prayer.

Prayer provides strength during uncertainty, comfort during hardship, and encouragement when the road ahead seems impossible.

Powerful Paul embodies this spiritual connection.

Although he appears as a playful cartoon character, his message is grounded in something much deeper: the belief that faith can give us the strength to overcome extraordinary challenges.

His ability to pull open the wall represents the idea that obstacles do not have to remain permanent.

Through prayer, perseverance, and trust in God, we can find the courage to confront challenges that once seemed impossible.

The mural also connects belief with forgiveness.

Spiritually, forgiveness allows us to release resentment, anger, and emotional burdens that can prevent us from moving forward.

Sometimes believing in a better future requires forgiving ourselves for past mistakes or forgiving others for the pain they have caused.

Forgiveness does not erase what happened, but it can free us from allowing the past to control our future.

Faith gives us the strength to believe. Forgiveness gives us the freedom to move forward.

Together, these principles encourage spiritual growth, emotional healing, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Artfully United — Inspiring Communities One Mural at a Time

Believe is the fourth installment of the Artfully United Mural Tour, founded by Mike Norice to transform public spaces into sources of inspiration and community pride.

The tour features large-scale murals throughout Los Angeles and surrounding communities, particularly in underserved neighborhoods where positive public messaging can have a meaningful impact.

Each mural centers around a powerful word or inspirational message, including:

HOPE. LOVE. BELIEVE. FORGIVENESS. UNITY.

These words are intentionally simple.

They are messages that children can understand, adults can appreciate, and entire communities can connect with.

Norice believes that a mural should be more than something beautiful to look at. It should be a conversation with the neighborhood surrounding it.

A child walking to school might see the word BELIEVE and feel encouraged to pursue a dream.

A parent facing financial difficulties might pass the mural and find a moment of hope.

Someone struggling with personal challenges might see Powerful Paul pulling open the wall and be reminded that their obstacles can be overcome.

These small moments of inspiration are what make public art meaningful.

Through Artfully United, Norice uses the power of visual storytelling to encourage positive thinking, strengthen community pride, and remind residents that their neighborhoods deserve beautiful and uplifting public spaces.

Powerful Paul — A Symbol of Hope Throughout Los Angeles

Created in 2006, Powerful Paul has become a central figure in Mike Norice's artistic practice and the Artfully United Mural Tour.

Featured in more than 25 murals throughout Watts, Compton, Inglewood, and South Los Angeles, Paul represents positivity, imagination, determination, and the belief that anything is possible.

His childlike appearance is intentional.

Children naturally connect with his playful personality, while adults recognize the deeper meaning behind his actions.

In every Artfully United mural, Powerful Paul helps bring the inspirational message to life.

Rather than simply placing a positive word on a wall, Norice creates a visual story that allows viewers to experience the meaning behind that word.

In Believe, Paul's physical action of unzipping the wall represents the emotional and spiritual work required to break through life's challenges.

He demonstrates that believing is not passive.

Believing requires action, courage, and the willingness to push beyond what we think is possible.

The Artistic Symbolism of Believe

The mural's composition uses bold lettering, contrasting colors, and imaginative character design to communicate its message.

The Word BELIEVE — Faith and Possibility

The enormous black lettering makes the message impossible to overlook. Its simplicity reinforces the importance of self-confidence, faith, and perseverance.

The Gray Wall — Life's Obstacles

The dark wall represents fear, negativity, uncertainty, and the limitations we sometimes place on ourselves.

The Yellow Zipper — Opening New Possibilities

The zipper symbolizes breaking through barriers, overcoming challenges, and discovering opportunities beyond our present circumstances.

Powerful Paul — Courage and Determination

Paul's joyful expression and determined posture represent the strength that comes from faith and positive thinking.

The White Background — Hope and New Beginnings

The bright white space revealed behind the wall represents clarity, renewal, and the possibilities waiting beyond life's challenges.

The Green Energy — Spiritual Strength

The vibrant green movement surrounding Powerful Paul suggests positive energy, personal growth, and the inner strength that helps us move forward.

A Positive Message for Every Generation

The message behind Believe is universal.

It speaks to children who are discovering their potential.

It encourages young adults who are pursuing their dreams.

It reminds parents and families to remain hopeful during difficult times.

And it inspires individuals of every age to recognize that setbacks do not have to become permanent limitations.

For communities facing economic hardship and social challenges, the message is especially meaningful.

Believe in yourself. Believe in your dreams. Believe in your community. Believe that tomorrow can be better than today.

These are the values at the heart of the Artfully United Mural Tour.
